Zeolite Supplements: An Alternative View

copper detox minerals zeolite

I get asked about zeolite a lot, but it’s not a supplement I recommend.
*
From Iron Toxicologist Jym Moon’s “Iron—The Most Toxic Metal”: “Zeolites are aluminosilicate members of microporous solids known as molecular sieves.”
*
There are 48 naturally occurring zeolites and more than 150 types have been synthesized. Natural zeolites are found where volcanic rocks and ash layers react with alkaline groundwater or in shallow marine environments.
*
Most of the world’s production of zeolite is shipped to China where it’s used in the production of cement to increase its compressive strength and durability, and reduce permeability.
*
“Zeolites have an open structure that can accommodate a wide variety of cations, such as Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Zn2+, Mn2+, Cu2+, and are currently marketed by companies that claim they can remove heavy metals from the human body. This claim is not true.”
*
“[They] may bind metals and prevent their absorption, but zeolites have no ability to remove heavy metals (or iron) from the human body. Overuse of zeolites will likely prevent absorption of essential nutrients such as magnesium, calcium, and zinc, but will not bring about the removal of toxic metals.”
*
Now for my first-hand experience with clients. I’ve seen zeolite supplements drive down clients’ hemoglobin levels drastically. One client had theirs go from 11 to 7 g/dl. That’s NOT good!
*
This alone tells me that zeolite impacts copper levels in a big way. And while these clients may have experienced temporary relief with zeolite (or just didn’t notice a difference), they came to work with me because after a while, they felt worse. And their copper levels were tanked.
*
While some people have certainly reported that zeolite was life changing - and this is absolutely not a post trying to diminish their experiences - genuinely believe it has the potential to create long-term problems.
*
Some food for thought!

Addendum: Dr. Boyd Haley and Andy Cutler are also great resources on this topic.
