Your body is listening...
There’s an undeniable connection between your body and your thoughts.
And when you’re trying to conceive, it’s important to monitor what you say out loud…and in your head. Especially the information you take in from others.
One of the most demonstrative but atrocious and abominable examples of this was the Monster Study conducted by Dr. Wendell Johnson in 1936 at the University of Iowa.
22 orphans were mixed and divided into two groups - one for “normal speakers” and one for “stutterers.” Regardless of whether or not they had a stutter or spoke normally, the group they were in was the way they were treated.
Every few weeks for five months, Johnson and his team met with the children to “evaluate” their speech. Children in the “normal speakers” group were praised regardless. Children in the “stutterers” group were told to stop talking and to not speak unless they could do it right.
The results?
The children who were praised didn’t see too much change except for one who improved. But of the 6 children in the “stutterers” group that actually didn’t have a speech issue, 5 out of 6 developed one. They became withdrawn and some stopped speaking all together.
Shocking? Yes.
I’m not a fan of toxic positivity. But it goes to show you how connected your thoughts and words are.
So be selective about the words you speak AND let in. And most of all, be kind to yourself, especially on your fertility journey. <3
