Copper is Essential for a Healthy Pregnancy
Let’s talk about pregnancy and copper for a minute. Did you know that copper is essential to having a successful and healthy pregnancy?
▪️
During pregnancy, a very important copper-containing protein called Ceruloplasmin (Cp) is responsible for modulating the hormone serotonin. Cp turns the hormone on and off as needed.
▪️
Without enough Cp to regulate serotonin, however, serotonin can build up. This can potentially cause the mother to go into a spontaneous abortion.
▪️
Excess serotonin can also cause children to be born with a tendency towards autism. In fact, the symptoms of serotonin toxicity and autism are incredibly similar.
▪️
Testing for copper and Cp hasn’t been a common practice since the 60s. Luckily I’m able to run these tests for my preconception clients (although copper and Cp is important for everyone!).
▪️
Preconception preparation, especially when it comes to the impact of mineral levels on pregnancy (and health in general), is why I focus so much on it in my practice. And while there will always things we cannot control, there are definitely steps we can take to set ourselves up for as much success as possible:
▪️
🔹Work with someone who can run the Full Monty Iron Panel and Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) to get your copper, Cp and mineral levels tested
🔹Consume copper-rich foods like beef liver, oysters and Vitamin C-rich foods
🔹Consume Vitamin A-rich foods like beef liver and high-quality dairy products
🔹Give yourself plenty of time to build up your vitamin and mineral stores for the healthiest baby possible (6 months - 1 year)
🔹This one’s hard, but patience is key! There’s a reason our ancestors had long preconception periods with purposeful rituals. It was to ensure the healthiest moms and babies!
