Calcium Supplements: Why I Don’t Recommend Them

calcium supplements

Another hot topic: Calcium.
🔸
Most people take Calcium supplements because they believe it’ll make their bones stronger.
🔸
“BONES ARE MADE OF MINERALS. Yes, one of those minerals is calcium, and yes, calcium is also important, but we create a grave imbalance in the body if we get too much calcium in a misguided effort to build strong bones.” — Dr. Robert Thompson, OBGYN
🔸
The body is much more sophisticated than we give it credit for. Bones are actually made of 12 minerals, including:
🔸
✨Calcium
✨Potassium
✨Magnesium
✨Manganese
✨Silica
✨Iron
✨Zinc
✨Selenium
✨Boron
✨Phosphorous
✨Sulfur
✨Chromium
+many more trace minerals
🔸
Supplementing anything in isolation can create more imbalance and deficiencies. Most people get plenty of Calcium from their diet, but it’s not being metabolized properly or getting where it needs to go because of missing cofactors.
🔸
When we have excess Calcium in the body, to which supplementation contributes, it can cause:
🔸
〰️Magnesium deficiency
〰️Adrenal gland suppression
〰️Magnesium absorption inhibition
〰️Sodium loss
〰️Potassium loss
〰️Low stomach acid
〰️Protein deficiency
〰️Sodium pump failure
〰️Insulin resistance
〰️Thyroid hormone resistance
〰️Slow metabolism
〰️Cravings
〰️Iron overload
🔸
Excess Calcium can lead to “multiple metabolic malfunctions, including obesity, heart disease, type 2 hypothyroidism, type 2 diabetes, anxiety, migraines, depression, hypertension.” — Dr. Robert Thompson, OBGYN
🔸
On pregnancy: “Unlike many other nutrients, calcium needs do not increase during pregnancy. Also, most women obtain enough calcium from food alone.” Because “...calcium absorption in the intestines doubles during pregnancy.” — Lily Nichols, R.D.
🔸
Yes, Calcium is very important for breastfeeding mamas, but now that you’ve learned what bones are truly made of, supplementing Calcium isn’t a solve-it-all solution.
🔸
I’ve RARELY come across a client who is truly deficient in Calcium in my practice, where I run Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA). If you want to figure out if you should truly be supplementing, an HTMA is the way to go.
