What is Adrenal Fatigue?

We hear about “adrenal fatigue” a lot in the health and wellness world. Maybe you have "it."

It's most often described as the inability of the adrenal glands to produce adrenal hormones like cortisol, along with a myriad of symptoms including:
▪️
🥱Fatigue
🤕Body aches
🐌Low blood pressure
👴Hair loss
➕And more
▪️
But let’s get one thing straight - adrenal fatigue doesn’t really exist.
▪️
How? Priorities.
▪️
The deeper the stress, the more trade-offs your body has to make. It’s not that your adrenal glands are so tired that they can’t make cortisol, but the downregulation of the HPA (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) axis. It’s HPA axis dysfunction.
▪️
When we’re exposed to stress for a long period of time, the body will try to protect itself from the harmful effects of high cortisol. The brain basically stops signaling to the adrenal glands to produce more of these hormones. This unfortunately decreases our ability to make cortisol during future stress.

Hans Selye said, “Excessive stress occurs when the demands placed on an organism exceed that organism’s reasonable capacity to fulfill them.”
▪️
This is why we feel fatigue, which is actually the #1 complaint from patients. We basically have a SUPPLY AND DEMAND issue. Our demand for energy is exceeding our supply.↗️ And as a result, we’re creating more EXHAUST (oxidants) than energy.💥

Conventional medicine treats adrenal fatigue with more cortisol. Functional medicine treats it with “adrenal-supporting” supplements. But none of these are actually effective, because they don’t address the real problem: we are living beyond our means and resources.
▪️
Instead of asking “what can I take” for my fatigue, ask “why” you have it in the first place. Take a look at my last post - how many stressors do you have? Are you covering the basics, like eating whole foods, balancing your blood sugar, getting sunlight and sleeping well? Are you getting the right nutrients - like copper - that help us create energy?
▪️
In order to truly bring things back into balance, we have to take a good, honest look at our demands and get real with ourselves. Saying “no” more often and protecting your energy is a great place to start.
