What does your mouth have to do with your pelvis?
What does your mouth have to do with your pelvis? 🤷
Did you know that when you were an embryo as your bones started to form, the depression that formed your mouth and the depression that formed your reproductive organs formed next to each other, and eventually turned into the top and bottom of our spine? Anatomically, the jaw and pelvic floor are actually quite similar. Fascinating!
Our fascia, connective tissue which runs from our pelvic floor muscles to the muscles in our jaw, are also connected. As well as the muscles surrounding the pelvic floor and the jaw. When we are in a relaxed state, our pelvic floor lengthens, relieving tension on the jaw. When we are in a stressed state, our pelvic floor contracts and our jaw tightens.
It’s not uncommon to have jaw pain and pelvic floor pain at the same time. Or to have one cause the other.
Chronic tightness in either area can lead to dysfunction. Which can also lead to unwanted things like poor circulation around our reproductive organs, abnormal or painful periods, pain during intercourse, urinary incontinence (leaking), headaches and migraines, or worse, fertility issues.
Addressing your nervous system and learning how to relax your pelvic floor can get you out of pain but also support your fertility journey. Pelvic imbalances may make it more difficult to conceive but can also make pregnancy incredibly uncomfortable.
