How to Get Rid of Melasma Naturally
What is Melasma?
▫️
Melasma is hyperpigmentation (discoloration, usually darker) of the skin in specific areas of the body, such as forehead, upper lips, cheeks, nose, chin and even neck, arms or back. It looks like

What causes Melasma?
▫️
The jury isn’t out on what causes melasma. However, definitely triggers associated with the development of melasma and flare ups, including:
▫️
🔹Birth control pills
🔹Hormone therapy
🔹Pregnancy
🔹Stress
🔹Sun exposure
▫️
What I see ⏩
▫️
1. High levels of estrogen oxidizing with iron and PUFAs aka lipofuscin aka age pigment. High estrogen means we aren’t making enough progesterone or that the ratio of estrogen to progesterone is simply too high. The more estrogen we have the more iron we absorb. And most of us are riddled with PUFAs from a lifetime of consuming vegetable, nut and seed oils. When estrogen and iron interact with PUFAs, they oxidize and create dark pigmentations on our skin.
▫️
2. Hypothyroidism. Those with melasma are 4X as likely to have an issue with the thyroid, which is VERY involved in skin pigmentation.
▫️
3. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Copper is an essential mineral for running melanin (pigmentation), the thyroid and the metabolism, and can be depleted with high levels of iron. Vitamin B deficiency is also associated with hyperpigmentation.
▫️
All of the above issues can feed into and out of each other.
