The body needs specific nutrients to create the DAO enzyme that clears histamine.

So many people struggle with histamine intolerance, and I really feel for them. But I also genuinely believe that “histamine intolerance” is a bit of a misnomer. “Histamine buildup” is more like it.
*
Histamines are compounds in food and the body, stored in mast cells in almost all tissues. They’re also involved in making stomach acid, muscle contraction and more. When we encounter an allergen, they’re released in our skin, mouth, nose, gut and blood, and move to the affected area. Histamines dock at receptors there and make us create mucus, sneeze, cough and itch.
*
Let’s make this clear: they’re a natural and important part of our physiology.
*
To clear histamine, our body naturally makes an enzyme called Diamine Oxidase (DAO) aka Histaminase. But to make that enzyme, Vitamin B6, Vitamin Ⓒ and — you guessed it — Copper are required. Many people are deficient in these nutrients.
*
In fact, Ceruloplasmin, a critical copper protein complex, increases histamine clearance by 400X. “...the result was a 400-fold increase in histaminolytic activity.” (Holmberg & Laurell)
*
What about antihistamines? These can definitely provide relief and do so by blocking histamine receptors. But if we’re not addressing the root cause of our histamine issues, it’s likely we may always have histamine issues.

Where to go from here?
