Progesterone Production vs. Utilization

Today I thought I’d take some time to clarify a really important point about one of the most important hormones for our overall fertility and wellbeing: progesterone.

*

Progesterone is a hormone that is produced in the ovaries by the corpus luteum, after an ovulation. It’s responsible for helping prepare the uterus for embryo implantation and ready cervical fluid.

*

โ• Making progesterone and enough of it is very important.

*

โ•โ•โ• BUT making sure we can actually utilize the progesterone we’ve made is also important. And this is definitely an area of opportunity that I see in most women that I work with.

*

We have progesterone receptors all over our bodies, including our brain, nose, nasopharyngeal passages, liver, lungs, optic pathway of the brain, skin, bones, bladder, womb, ovaries, fallopian tubes and breasts.

*

In an ideal state, the progesterone we create binds to the progesterone receptors all over our body. But this is not always the case.

*

One of the things that can disrupt this process is the presence of adrenaline, which blocks the transport of progesterone for it to be utilized by the cell.

*

“...progesterone receptors do not transport progesterone molecules into the nucleus of cells if adrenaline is present. This is most likely to happen in everyday life when we miss a meal and our blood sugar level drops.” (Dalton)

*

How can we combat this?

*

Balance our blood sugar.

*

๐Ÿฅ˜ Eat the right ratio of macronutrients (protein, carb and fat)

๐Ÿฅ˜ Eat at the right frequency throughout the day, including within 1 hour of waking

*

Of course, finding your right blood sugar balance can be unique and require some experimentation. :)
