Adequate selenium intake is associated with lower preterm delivery risk.
Selenium gets a lot of recognition when it comes to thyroid health, but did you know it can also be important for pregnancy?
Of course, thyroid function is also important for fertility and pregnancy, but Selenium levels alone have been shown to affect the outcome of a pregnancy.
Higher intake of Selenium by mama is associated with a decreased risk of preterm delivery. It’s also associated with a small increase in gestational length. (Barman et al)
What’s interesting about this is that higher intake refers to higher than the recommended daily allowance. And that these benefits were only achieved through Selenium from food - not supplements. 🤔
So where can we get more Selenium?
Seafood! It’s one of the richest sources of Selenium, hands down.
I’ll be talking about Selenium, sources, seafood and more in my upcoming course called Conscious Conceptiont. Sign up for updates to hear more about its launch next month!
