Lost Pregnancy Prep Traditions
Preparing for pregnancy has become a lost art. But it’s one that our ancestors practiced well.
In the time leading up to pregnancy, traditional cultures had specific preconception rituals that both partners were required to follow.
This was all in an effort to:
∿Increase fertility of mom and dad
∿Support mom’s health during pregnancy
∿Support optimal health and development of baby
∿Ensure survival of mom and baby postpartum
∿Ensure survival of the next child
There is actually so much more you can do to bring the best version of yourself into your pregnancy.
If you’re thinking about having a baby in the future, you’ve probably heard that you just need to cut down on alcohol and smoking, and take a prenatal.
But if you compare this to the traditions of our ancestors, there is so much more we can actually do. Most couples were required to follow special preconception rituals involving eating specific foods for a specific time frame before they were allowed to marry and try to conceive.
*Here some past pregnancy prep traditions for both mothers and fathers-to-be:
Some tribes by the sea ate a lot of fish eggs and reproductive organs of sharks.
Some mountain groups with access to dairy would eat butter specifically from cows that ate the greenest and lushest grass.
Some inland tribes would eat organ meats like the liver and thyroid of the animals they harvested.

Real Talk: You don’t need to go THAT primal. And pregnancy prep is a luxury that some couples don’t get a chance to partake in.
But the point here is that pregnancy prep is actually a lost artform. And that there is actually so much more you can do to enter pregnancy the best version of yourself.
