Let’s Talk Hot Flashes
Hot flashes are seen as a 'women’s issue,' but men get hot flashes too!
▪️
Many of my clients - all different ages and sexes - have suffered from hot flashes in the past. Why do they happen?
▪️
One of the drivers of hot flashes is IRON. As we age, we accumulate more iron in our tissues. This causes a loss of minerals like magnesium. It also causes imbalances in hormones like estrogen. To put it simply, iron overload drives many symptoms, including hot flashes.
▪️
STRESS is a very clear driver. When the body is in fight or flight mode, cortisol is released, which increases blood pressure and may make us feel hotter. Long-term, stress causes our body to deprioritize reproduction, causing hormone imbalances.
▪️
A little further down the chain and what is most synonymously associated with hot flashes is too much ESTROGEN, which can act like cortisol in a lot of ways. It can increase vasodilation of the blood vessels, increasing blood pressure and boosting inflammatory hormones - like cortisol.
▪️
Too little PROGESTERONE is usually the main culprit, but keep in mind, it’s usually the RESULT of the above drivers. If we’re not living our lives in a balanced way that’s supportive to reproduction, the female body will forego ovulation. You need to ovulate to make progesterone.
▪️
Too little TESTOSTERONE. Men that have testosterone deficiency can also experience hot flashes.
▪️
There may be other drivers, but how do we address hot flashes in a foundational way?
▪️
🐄EAT NUTRIENT-DENSE FOODS. Avoid iron-fortified foods. Prioritize mineral and vitamin-rich foods like organ meats, bone broths, quality muscle meats, fruits, roots and quality dairy products.
▪️
🔋SUPPORT YOUR LIVER. Avoid fasting. Eat at a frequency that makes sense for you to keep your liver’s energy stores supplied.
▪️
❎MINIMIZE ESTROGEN. Things like plastics, chemically-laden cookware and personal care products, eating PUFAs, drinking alcohol, drinking tap water, etc. all increase our estrogen.
▪️
🌱REMOVE OTHER STRESSORS. How you live your life impacts your body immensely. Observe and make changes accordingly.
▪️
🩸DONATE BLOOD. Prep and frequency should be consulted with a practitioner.
