Infant Formula Recipe
HOMEMADE BABY FORMULA RECIPE
Sometimes those of us that want to breastfeed struggle with producing enough milk. It happens! And for those of us that prefer a more alternative approach, store-bought formula doesn’t have to be the answer.
The Weston A. Price Foundation’s homemade baby formula recipe was created by Mary Enig, PhD and can be found in Nourishing Traditions. Here is the classic, long-standing recipe that many mommas have been using with success.
*INGREDIENTS:
∿ 2 cups whole raw, grass-fed cow’s milk
∿ 1/4 cup homemade liquid whey (not powdered whey or whey from making cheese; only homemade whey separated milk, yogurt, or kefir)
∿ 4 tbsp lactose
∿ 1/4 tsp bifidobacterium infantis probiotic
∿ 2 or more tbsp high-quality cream (not ultra pasteurized; increase if coming from Holstein cows)
∿ 1 tsp cod liver oil
∿ 1/4 tsp butter oil (optional)
∿ 1 tsp expeller-pressed sunflower oil
∿ 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil
∿ 2 tsp coconut oil
∿ 2 tsp Frontier nutritional yeast flakes
∿ 2 tsp gelatin
∿ 1-7/8 cups filtered water
∿ 1/4 tsp acerola powder
*DIRECTIONS:
Add 2 cups filtered water into pyrex measuring pitcher and remove 2 tbsp (total volume left should yield 1 & ⅞ cups water)
Transfer half the amount of water into pan over medium flame
Add the gelatin and lactose to the pan and allow to dissolve, stirring occasionally. When dissolved, remove from heat and combine with the remaining water to cool the mixture.
Add the coconut oil and optional butter oil. Stir until melted and combined.
Place remaining ingredients into a blender. Add the water mixture and blend ~3 seconds. Transfer to glass bottles or a glass mason jar and refrigerate.
Before feeding to baby, warm the bottles by placing in hot water or a bottle warmer - never microwave.
