You Have to Get Healthy to Lose Weight, Not Lose Weight to Get Healthy
In my opinion, our idea of health is more backwards than ever today. We live in a culture of convenience, and our approach to health is no different.
We’re constantly focused on quick fixes. We do the latest fad diet for “this” and take the buzzworthy supplement for “that.” And if we’re honest with ourselves, we’re not doing it because we want to get healthy. We’re doing it because we want results fast. We don’t really want to put in the work.
Believe it or not, more than 4 in 10 Americans are obese. And this isn’t because of lack of exercise - people in the US are exercising more than ever. We live in a world that is more stressful than ever. Paired with unhealthy habits and a “passive” mindset about our own health, we have a recipe for dysfunction. And weight gain is exactly that: a symptom of dysfunction.
Addressing our dysfunction with yo-yo dieting and over-supplementation (and a lot of times medication too) actually drives us further and further into dysfunction. None of these approaches work. Why? Because we haven’t actually changed the habits that got us here in the first place. You’ve heard this before: you simply can’t out-diet or out-supplement an unhealthy diet and lifestyle.
Health has nothing and everything to do with weight loss. Think about how long it took you to get here and what you’ve done up until this point. This is how much time you’ve spent in dysfunction and why. Your body has adapted time and time again to keep you alive.
When we can start looking at weight gain as a symptom of the way we've been living - not as a lack of exercise or fad diets or pills - we can start making decisions that steer us away from dysfunction and towards long-term health. We are ultimately in control of our own health, which is a choice. And addressing the dysfunction - not the weight gain - is what will set you up for truly sustainable weight loss.
