Feeling Paralyzed? Create a Routine

lifestyle relax

Many of us have “analysis paralysis” right now. We are so overwhelmed that we can’t do anything at all.

Our limbic system, also known as our “lizard brain,” has quite literally taken over. This is the side of the brain in charge of our stress response (“fight or flight”) and fear. We’re frozen in place, just like a lizard scuttling across the size walk.

Hurricane Sandy hitting in 2012 was an eye-opener. I was living in NYC with no power, heat, water or food for weeks. My boyfriend (now husband) couldn’t leave his apartment because the entire first floor of his apartment building was completely submerged.

What did I do to come out of this “paralyzed” state? I created a routine and made sure I:
-Got enough sleep and went to bed around the same time each night
-Kept my meal times consistent no matter how creative I had to get in the kitchen
-Hydrated from morning to evening
-Moved my body every day, whether it was a walk or a body weight workout
-Got outside whenever I could (weather permitting)
-Communicated with friends and family

Sticking to a routine can help us feel in control, even when everything seems to be spiraling out. It can reduce overall stress and anxiety, help us sleep better, create calmness and focus, give us a sense of purpose, and improve our overall well-being.

So how about it?
