Do you know if your periods are true periods?

cycle ovulation periods

You: Wait…what?! Me: Yeah, do you actually know?

Why there is SO much confusion: You can get your periods without ovulating. But you cannot ovulate without a period (unless you’ve gotten pregnant during that cycle). Ovulation comes before your period.

A “normal cycle” (for the sake of this discussion): During a normal cycle, Day 1 starts with our Period. About mid-cycle, Ovulation takes place and we release an egg from our ovary. If the egg doesn’t get fertilized, our Period comes and our cycle starts all over again.

An anovulatory cycle: We do not ovulate, meaning an egg doesn’t get released mid-cycle. If we don’t release an egg, there’s nothing to fertilize. We can still bleed, but because our uterine lining builds up so much that it can no longer sustain itself.

There can be SO much heartache and despair when we see a Big Fat Negative (BFN) if we don’t understand the fundamentals of our physiology. And I'm here to tell you it doesn't have to be this way!

Truly understanding what’s happening in our cycle can tell us SO much about our health. And this can be invaluable, especially when the goal is pregnancy.
