Bones are made of 12 different minerals, not just calcium.
One of the most common questions I’ve been getting lately is if I believe a Calcium supplement is necessary during pregnancy.
This question often comes from the belief that Calcium is important for bones. While this is true, what most people don’t realize is that Calcium is just one of the many minerals that make up bones and are important to bone health.
In fact, bones are made up of 12 different minerals, including:
⇴Calcium
⇴Potassium
⇴Magnesium
⇴Manganese
⇴Silica
⇴Iron
⇴Zinc
⇴Selenium
⇴Boron
⇴Phosphorous
⇴Sulfur
⇴Chromium
⇴And many more trace minerals

As you can see, while Calcium is an important mineral for bone health, it’s definitely not the only one we should be focusing on.
One of the other things we may not realize is that during pregnancy, the body increases absorption by 100%. (Nichols) Your incredible body always has your back, mama!
Plus, isolated supplementation, especially over supplementation, can cause a whole host of other issues.
A great tool that can be used to determine if Calcium supplementation is truly needed is a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA). I’ll be diving deeper on this test and other helpful ones in my upcoming course. Sign up via the link in my bio for updates!
