BPA Can Alter a Baby’s Reproductive Development
Today we’re going to talk about bisphenol-A aka #BPA.
🔸
BPAs are most commonly used in the production of plastic goods, the lining of canned goods (including liquid and powder formula), water pipes, receipt paper, electronics and many others. Why should you care about it?
🔸
Like other xenoestrogens, BPA is a chemical that acts like estrogen in the body, which can throw off hormonal balance in ourselves - and fetal development.
🔸
Studies on BPA have shown that it can:
🔸
〰️Alter reproductive development of babies (genitalia and breasts)
〰️Change breast tissue
〰️Impair milk production
〰️Interfere with insulin signaling
〰️Cause dysfunction of beta cells of the pancreas
〰️Drive hyperactivity and other behavioral problems in children
🔸
It can also be a risk factor for miscarriage and premature delivery, as well as other adverse outcomes.
🔸
What’s even more sobering is that amniotic fluid has been shown to contain 5X more BPA than urine. This suggests that pregnancy presents a certain vulnerability to these chemicals.
🔸
While we certainly can’t control everything we come in contact with, there are certain things we can do to limit our daily exposure to BPA and other plastics for happier and healthier hormones and babies:
🔸
〰️Ditch plastic food containers for glass ones
〰️Ditch plastic water bottles for glass or stainless steel ones
〰️Ditch plastic baby bottles for glass ones
〰️Swap plastic wrap for waxed cloths
