Are Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids Really Essential?
This post may contradict the mainstream and even the alternative health dogma. All I ask is that you keep an open mind.
▪️
The term “Essential Fatty Acids” (EFAs) was created by George and Mildred Burr in 1929, when they published a paper about study they did on rats (not humans), declaring that polyunsaturated fat (PUFA) linoleic acid (omega-6) was essential to preventing several diseases and to health. From there, a “deficiency” in EFAs was called Burr’s disease.
▪️
10 years later, the Clayton Foundation Biochemical Institute at UT realized that Burr’s disease was actually a Vitamin B6 deficiency. Before 1939, B Vitamins had not yet been discovered.

PUFAs:
🐌Slow down the metabolism + thyroid function
🤏Decrease the need for nutrients
🦠Suppress the immune system
🥚Drive infertility
◽Kill white blood cells
❌Inhibit proteolytic enzymes
🧓Increase aging
➕And so much more
▪️
A diet low in PUFA increases the need for nutrients, especially B Vitamins. The rats on a non-PUFA diet had higher metabolisms and this was not being met with adequate nutrition. This is what the Burrs weren’t seeing.
▪️
If PUFAs like fish oil are so bad, why is everyone talking about them?
▪️
In the 1950s, we ditched saturated fats because we were told it “caused heart disease” (see my PUFAs post). During this time, omega-3 oils were gaining popularity as the “overlooked EFAs,” despite the “crazy chick disease” and “yellow fat disease” in farm animals being fed omega-3s.
▪️
"Although by 1980 many animal diseases were known to be caused by eating oily fish, and the unsaturated oils were known to accelerate the formation of the "age pigment," lipofuscin, many "beneficial effects" of dietary fish oil started appearing in research journals around that time, and the mass media responding to the industry's PR campaign, began ignoring studies that showed harmful effects from eating fish oil." - Dr. Ray Peat
