40-60% of the population may not be able to properly convert Folic Acid.
#MTHFR...we hear about it so often, but what’s the deal?
Well, the truth is that everyone has MTHFR! 🤯
MTHFR actually refers to the enzyme methyltetrahydrofolate reductase, which has several important roles, including a big one in Folate (Vitamin B9) metabolism.
What most people mean when they say “I have MTHFR” is that they have a polymorphism aka one or more variations in DN@ sequence. This means they can have less enzymatic MTHFR activity and thus, have issues with Folate metabolism, especially when it comes to converting synthetic Folic Acid.
That said, it’s not just a few of us that have this issue. It’s quite a big chunk!
“About 40% to 60% of the population has genetɪc polymorphisms that impair the conversion of supplemental folic acid to its active form, l-methylfolate.” (Bell)
So in short, for about ½ of the population, Folic Acid isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. And because Folate is so important to optimal fertility and building a healthy baby, it can be important to figure out if you’re one of the 40-60% that has one of these MTHFR mutations.
